14 Jun GROW Leadership Academy Scholarship Applications are OPEN!
Applications for the GROW Leadership Academy (GLA) Class of 2016 is now open until 8 July 2016. RLabs and its partners will give away 120 Scholarships to the value of R3.1 Million ($200,000). The GLA programme is ideal for young people who are passionate about entrepreneurship, technology and making a difference in their community.
Since its inception in 2011, more than 700 young people have graduated from the programme in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with over 600 job opportunities accessed and graduates launching over 50 start-up enterprises and small businesses. The programme was also successfully launched in Iringa, Tanzania where it equipped more than 250 young people with a strong focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, technology and agriculture. Partners over the last few years for the GROW Leadership Academy included Omidyar Network, USAID, GivenGain, Automattic, GetSmarter and WebGrowth.
The main focus of the programme are:
Students work closely with two life coaches who teach them how to harness their potential.
Students are introduced to various online tools including social media platforms to give them a digital voice.
CREATIVE WRITING & DESIGN
Enabling students to exercise their ideas through visual thinking, mind mapping, reading and comprehension.
Identifying needs/opportunities that will be converted to a business opportunity.
Community Involvement, Social Innovation and Project Management are also included in the course.
Grant Johnson, 21, a GLA graduate, said: ‘The course exceeded all of my
expectations. And I highly recommend that young people grab hold of the
opportunity. It’s free! But life-changing’.
The GLA programme is aimed at unemployed youth aged 18 -25 years old, with a grade 11 or 12 pass. The programme runs on a Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30am – 3:30pm, and a lunch snack, tea and coffee are provided during GLA training days.
Rabia Adamson, GLA Lead, said the programme uses a ‘play and learn’
approach in all classes. We believe that young people have the capacity to
become leaders in their own right, if given the exposure and opportunity
to demonstrate their skills through positive social action.
